Panchakarma Treatment

Experience a structured and individualized approach to Panchakarma at ITNOA Ayurved Clinic.

Panchakarma represents a group of specialized therapeutic procedures selected according to an individual’s constitution, health condition and practitioner assessment. At ITNOA Ayurved Clinic, it is not treated as a standard wellness package.

What is Panchakarma?

A structured paththrough Panchakarma, personalized for you.

Panchakarma literally refers to “five actions,” but the clinical system is much broader than a list of five procedures. It is a carefully sequenced Ayurvedic program of preparation, selected main therapy and post-treatment care.

Treatment selection may be influenced by Prakriti, Vikriti, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, Agni, age and strength, current health condition, diet and lifestyle, season and practitioner assessment.

Massage, oleation and therapeutic sweating may support preparation, yet they do not automatically represent the complete process. This is why two patients may receive different recommendations and timelines.

01

Purvakarma

Individual preparation using measures selected for the patient and planned therapy.

02

Pradhana Karma

The principal procedure or procedures chosen after professional assessment.

03

Paschat Karma

Guided transition in diet, routine and activity after the main therapeutic stage.

More than massage

Three parts of a structured Panchakarma program.

Massage, oil therapies and therapeutic sweating may form part of preparation or supportive care, but they should not automatically be considered the complete Panchakarma process.

01

Purvakarma

Preparatory measures before selected main therapies.

02

Pradhana Karma

The main procedure or procedures selected by the practitioner.

03

Paschat Karma

Post-treatment care, including an appropriate transition in diet, routine and activity.

Purvakarma

Preparing for Panchakarma.

Before selected procedures, Ayurveda describes preparatory measures known as Purvakarma. The exact preparation varies according to the individual and the planned therapy.

Snehana

Ayurvedic oleation

The therapeutic use of suitable oils or other unctuous substances. Internal or external approaches may be used where appropriate, as determined by the practitioner.

Svedana

Therapeutic sudation

Therapeutic sweating or fomentation that may be used after appropriate oleation in selected preparation protocols.

The five classical procedures

Five actions, selected through professional assessment.

Not every patient requires all five. The appropriate therapy should be selected only after professional Ayurvedic assessment.

01

Vamana

Therapeutic emesis

A medically supervised specialized procedure traditionally associated with selected situations involving Kapha. It requires careful patient selection, preparation, supervision, monitoring and post-procedure care.

02

Virechana

Therapeutic purgation

A practitioner-directed procedure traditionally associated with selected Pitta-related presentations. Suitability depends on constitution, condition, strength and other health circumstances.

03

Basti

Medicated Ayurvedic enema therapy

Practitioner-directed administration of specially selected Ayurvedic preparations through the rectal route. Within Ayurvedic theory, Basti has an important relationship with Vata management.

04

Nasya

Ayurvedic nasal therapy

Administration of appropriately selected preparations through the nasal route. Preparation, substance, quantity, timing and suitability are determined by the practitioner.

05

Raktamokshana

A classical para-surgical concept

A specialized tradition involving bloodletting or related procedures described in classical literature. Where professionally and legally appropriate, it requires qualified assessment and suitable clinical protocols.

Which treatment do I need?

You don’t need to decide yourself.

The more important question is: what does your individual assessment indicate?

  • Your primary concern
  • Ayurvedic constitution
  • Current assessment
  • Age and physical strength
  • Digestive status
  • Health history and medicines
  • Previous treatments
  • Lifestyle, diet and season

A personalized plan can then be developed.

Diet

Diet during Panchakarma

Diet can form an important part of an individualized program. Follow the instructions provided by your practitioner rather than a generic online “detox diet.” Recommendations may focus on appropriate, easily digestible foods and a gradual transition before or after certain procedures.

Lifestyle

Routine and rest

Your practitioner may recommend temporary adjustments to daily activities during particular stages. Rest, routine and adherence to professional instructions can be important components of a structured program.

Individualized care

Not one standard package

One patient may require preparatory therapies and one selected main procedure. Another may require a different sequence. A third may not currently be an appropriate candidate for intensive procedures.

The treatment should fit the patient - not the patient fit a package.
Professional guidance

Can Panchakarma be done at home?

Specialized procedures such as therapeutic emesis, purgation and medicated enema require appropriate patient selection and professional supervision. Gentle lifestyle practices recommended by a practitioner should not be confused with professionally supervised Panchakarma.

Who should take extra care?

Professional assessment is particularly important with pregnancy or breastfeeding, acute illness, recent surgery, significant weakness, certain cardiovascular or other medical conditions, use of certain medicines, or other circumstances affecting suitability.

Always disclose relevant medical conditions and medicines during consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Understanding Panchakarma.

What does Panchakarma mean?

It literally refers to “five actions” and is associated with five principal therapeutic procedures within classical Ayurveda.

Do I need all five treatments?

No. Panchakarma should be individualized. A practitioner determines which therapy or combination is appropriate.

How long does Panchakarma take?

There is no universal duration. The timeline depends on the individual’s condition, selected procedure, preparation and post-treatment requirements.

Is Panchakarma only massage?

No. Massage and oleation may be preparatory or supportive therapies, but Panchakarma is a broader structured therapeutic process.

Can I continue my medicines?

Tell your practitioner about all medicines you take. Do not stop, reduce or change prescribed medication without consulting the responsible healthcare professional.

Is Panchakarma suitable for everyone?

No. Suitability depends on health, strength, condition and other factors assessed by the practitioner.
